The National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder, Inc. (“NEABPD”) respects the privacy of individuals and is committed to the responsible stewardship of personal information.

This Privacy Policy summarizes how we securely collect data through our website and other sources, use such data to support the mission of our organization, and maintain such data in a responsible and appropriate manner.

NEABPD may issue a separate privacy notice tailored to a specific use case. If you receive such a notice, that notice will control to the extent that it differs from this Privacy Policy.

Please note that your access to and use of our website is also subject to our Terms and Conditions of Use.

This Privacy Policy does not apply to personal data collected and used for employment processes. Employees of NEABPD should refer to the employee handbook for information about how such data is managed.

DATA TYPES
Unless otherwise specified in this Privacy Policy, personally identifiable information (“PII”) means any information that can identify an individual directly or when paired with other information.

We may collect, use, store, share, and transfer different categories of PII and non-personal information, including but not limited to:

  • Identity—First name, last name, username or similar identifier, marital status, title, date of birth, gender identifier

Direct Interactions. You may directly provide PII when you, for example:

  • Donate to us
  • Register for or participate in our services or events

  • Apply for volunteer opportunities
  • Provide feedback

NEABPD and/or the service providers, vendors, and other third parties we hire to perform services on our behalf may use your PII to take certain action including, without limitation:

  • Maintain our relationship with you

We may share your PII with the parties set out below for the data usage purposes set out above:

  • Internal Parties—Individuals or groups within NEABPD for operational purposes.
  • Partners—Our related organizations, affiliates, and business partners, as applicable.
  • Advisors—Professional advisors such as lawyers, bankers, auditors, consultants, and insurers.
  • Government—U.S. Internal Revenue Service and other government agencies, regulators, and authorities.
  • Third Parties—Third parties who perform services on our behalf, such as fundraising assistance.
    • We do not allow our third-party service providers to use your PII for their own direct marketing purposes and only permit them to process your PII for specified purposes and in accordance with our instructions.
    • We do not sell your PII to any third parties.
    • We may allow third parties to use information that has been de-identified or aggregated.

If we transfer your PII to another country, we do so in compliance with all applicable data protection laws.

DATA RETENTION
We only retain your PII for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which we collected it. To determine the appropriate retention period for PII, we consider the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the PII, any applicable legal requirements, the potential risk of harm from unauthorized use or disclosure of your PII, the purposes for which we process your PII, and whether we can achieve those purposes through other means.

DATA SECURITY
We limit access to your PII to those who have an actual need to know.

We have security measures built into our system to prevent your PII from being misused in any way while it is under our control. For example, anyone who is granted access to our data management platform is required to enable multi-factor authentication. Additionally, the Family Connections application is built on our data management platform, then embedded in our website.

In the event of an actual or potential data breach, we will notify you and any applicable regulator as required by law.

EXTERNAL LINKS
As a convenience to visitors and users of our website, NEABPD may offer links to other sites that we believe may offer useful information. The inclusion of a link on the NEABPD website does not imply our endorsement of the linked site or service.

This Privacy Policy is no longer applicable when you leave our site by way of link. Each of these linked sites maintains its own independent privacy policies and procedures, which you should consult before providing any of your PII.

CHILDREN’S PRIVACY
We recognize the particularly sensitive nature of children’s data and pay special attention to handling children’s data lawfully and ethically. We comply fully with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and all other applicable laws.

We do not knowingly solicit data from, or target communications to, children, except for certain instances where we may collect PII of a specific child with informed consent from his or her parent or guardian. If a parent or guardian becomes aware that his or her child has provided us with PII, he or she should notify us using the contact information provided above. Once notified, we will take reasonable steps to delete such data.

We never knowingly collect PII from children under the age of thirteen. If you have reason to believe that a child under the age of thirteen has provided PII to NEABPD through our website, please notify us using the contact information provided above. Once notified, we will take reasonable steps to delete it as soon as practicable.

LAWFUL BASIS
We only use your PII when the law allows us to do so.

Most commonly, we will use your PII in the following circumstances:

  • Contract Performance—We need to fulfil the contract we are about to enter or have entered with you
  • Legitimate Interests—It is necessary for our legitimate interests (or those of a third party) and your interests and fundamental rights do not override those interests
